I'll have to admit, when my sales associate called me on my work phone, Thursday evening, to tell me that a customer of ours told her that Michael Jackson had died, I initially thought it was a joke. To my knowledge, Michael Jackson has been "reported" to have died several times in the past 10 years; of course, these were all hoaxes, so to me it's not surprising that my reaction was "Who effed up, this time?" It wasn't until I got actual confirmation of his death from such credible sources as CNN and ABCNews when I actually believed the story of Michael Jackon's death.

However, as much of a tragedy it is, the thing that bothers me about this whole situation is the response of the public. Yes, Michael Jackson was an icon. Yes, his music was profound and touched on several issues that he thought needed to be addressed - like talking to men in mirrors. And, yes, he was even in the spotlight for negativity when he was accused of molesting children. (Whether or not he actually did, I'm not going there - that's not the point I'm trying to make.)

HOWEVER, I am always disappointed by the response of the public. Even though this man was a celebrity, he was still a human being - with a family and people who loved him who, especially right now, need their time to mourn and get affairs in order. The last thing any of those people need at this time are "fans" taking pictures of their grief and basically getting in the way. One thing I saw was a reporter outside of the hospital, and there was a crowd of people, standing outside. A CROWD! People forget about the things like hospitals catering to more than just one person, one CELEBRITY, and standing around impedes the doctors and nurses from being able to do their jobs for those who do not have the notoriety Michael Jackson did.

It's all quite saddening, the death of Michael Jackson and the response of his "fans" and "haters". What Perez Hilton said was callous and definitely uncalled for; if anything, his post should have been held on the screen, finger poised over the "Submit" button, until final word from the doctors and media declared him legally deceased. The problem is that, due to First Amendment rights, things like this can be said, and regardless of reaction and response, the person who said such things can just sit back, look of innocence on their face, and say, "Wha-? I was just sayin'!"

It's a sad, sad world in which we live, and it becomes truly evident when a celebrity passes on. Oh, what a magnificent species we be.
